父の棚にあったオールドパー。時を超えて、今また注目の理由

Old Parr from my father's shelf. What's behind its renewed popularity across the ages?

🕰️ "Now is the time to go classic."

🥃 Yo-ko, the owner of a liquor store for 20 years, has seen how this prestigious blended Scotch whisky has been loved through the ages.

The current whisky market is in the golden age of single malts.
While sweet, rich sherry cask whiskies and smoky Islay whiskies are drawing attention,
it is precisely now that I want to introduce a bottle that can be called "the origin."

That is Old Parr.

🏠 A staple in Showa-era homes.

📺 From the Showa era to the early Heisei era, "Old Parr" was considered a "special whisky" in Japanese households.
Year-end gifts, mid-year gifts, souvenirs from hometown visits, celebratory drinks——
Everyone who saw that golden label and black, plump bottle would think, "Oh, a good bottle of sake has arrived."

Old Parr is actually also known for the anecdote that Emperor Showa was a fan of it.
It is a whisky with "class" that has been loved by many prominent figures, including political and financial leaders, cultural figures, and celebrities.

👩🦰 Even when whisky wasn't as popular, store owner Yo-ko, who has been in this business for a long time, recalls that
Old Parr consistently sold well as a special item.

📜 The History of Old Parr

■ Origin of the name

The name "Old Parr" comes from Thomas Parr.
He was said to be the longest-lived person in English history, a legendary figure who lived to be 152 years old.
Drawing on his "unchanging longevity," the brand embodies the wish to be "a timeless presence."
🧓 The portrait on the label is Thomas Parr himself.

■ Founding and growth

Old Parr was created in 1871 by the Greenlees Brothers.
At that time, Scotch whisky's quality was still inconsistent, and it was an era when only "connoisseurs" drank whisky.
Amidst this, it grew to become a representative blended whisky, emphasizing consistent taste and high quality.

In the 20th century, with Mortlach Distillery as its key malt,
it gained high acclaim worldwide for its powerful and rich flavor.

■ Reception in Japan

In post-war Japan, Old Parr became known as "the longed-for Western liquor."
Especially after the 1950s,

  • The anecdote that Emperor Showa liked it

  • Distribution as a luxury gift (department stores and high-end liquor stores)

  • Depictions in TV dramas and magazines implying "good liquor = Old Parr"
made it the leading "status whisky in Japan."

■ Legacy in the modern era

Currently, Old Parr is owned by Diageo (one of the world's largest alcoholic beverage manufacturers)
While preserving its tradition, it also offers premium lines such as Superior and 18-year-old,
continuing to convey the value of classic Scotch.

🍫 Sweetness and bitterness are balanced beautifully, and the finish lingers elegantly.

🎁 Its luxurious packaging makes it perfect for gifting.
👑 A masterpiece that will impress even seasoned drinkers.

🔄 Unchanging deliciousness, not swayed by trends.

Old Parr is one of the few whiskies that has endured since the era when whisky was considered a "formal drink."

Please take the time to savor the depth of classic blended Scotch, and
the reason why it has been loved by Japanese people through the ages.
