Octomore 17.3 Islay Barley: five casks embodying terroir
The third expression in the 17th series of Bruichladdich Distillery's super-heavily peated Octomore series. It embodies a commitment to the barley, its place of origin, and the land. It uses 100% Concerto barley grown on Octomore Farm on Islay.
What makes it special
Wrapped in an intense peat smoke measuring 132.1 ppm, this whisky combines power with elegance and delicate nuances. It is matured using first-fill bourbon casks, as well as second-fill Ribera del Duero, Sauternes, ice wine, and Syrah casks. Spirits matured for five years in each cask type are then combined.
Tasting notes
Punchy peat smoke is layered with sweet aromas from oak casks, leading to flavors reminiscent of salted caramel, smoked apple, and toasted coconut. The rich sweetness of praline and vanilla cream then emerges. With peat, caramel, and salinity at its core, this whisky offers a complex character created by multiple cask types.
Recommended way to enjoy
To enjoy its powerful cask-strength character, start by tasting it neat. Adding a small amount of water allows the aromas to open up even more beautifully.
