Orval 330ml | Belgian Trappist Beer
What is Orval — A Legendary Trappist Beer with 800 Years of History
Orval is a Trappist beer still brewed by monks using traditional methods at Orval Abbey, nestled deep in the Ardennes forest in southern Belgium. It is recognized as one of the few "authentic Trappist beers" in the world, and this abbey produces only one type of beer: Orval. From its deep amber liquid with an orange hue, a refreshing hop aroma and a fruity aroma reminiscent of apples rise, allowing you to feel the serene passage of time in the abbey with every sip.
The Legend of Matilda's Spring
In 1076, when Countess Matilda of Tuscany, Italy, visited this place, she dropped her precious wedding ring, a gift from her late husband, into a spring. It is said that when she prayed, "If my ring returns, I will build a magnificent abbey in this valley," a trout emerged from the spring, holding the ring in its mouth. This is the origin of the name "Orval (Golden Valley)," and the trout with the ring is depicted on the label and bottle cap.
The Art of Timeless Flavor: The Unique Character Created by Dry Hopping
The moment it's poured into a glass, a powerful yet elegant hop aroma from dry hopping spreads. Within its dry palate, fruity acidity reminiscent of apples and citrus intricately intertwines with the sweetness of malt, offering a deep and enjoyable flavor that lingers. It is also ideal as an aperitif, and has many devoted fans in Japan, with some enthusiasts even enjoying it after "aging" it in the bottle for several years. The dedicated glass is a chalice shape designed by architect Henri Vaes, who designed the abbey, and is engraved with a strong logo.
Blissful Pairings to Enhance Gastronomy
Orval's complex aroma and bitterness are complemented by umami-rich dishes. It pairs exceptionally well with "aged cheeses with white mold," fatty "roasted duck," and aromatic "game dishes" (these are our recommended pairings). Start enjoying it at a slightly cooler temperature of 8-12°C and savor the changes in aroma as it slowly opens up in the glass.
