"Caledonian Quest" is a new series that appeals to the inner child in adults, classifying whiskies by cask type and featuring unique monsters on each label. This particular bottle is a rare single cask distilled in 2011 at the Craigellachie distillery in Speyside, matured for 13 years in a first-fill Bourbon barrel, and bottled at cask strength. It is a limited edition with only 135 bottles produced.
Key Features
The bottom right of the label features a radar chart illustrating the whisky's flavor characteristics (HP: heaviness, MP: fruitiness, PW: peat level, AP: refinement, KW: sweetness), incorporating the playful spirit of collecting monster cards and enjoying a battle game. It's an attractive bottle that combines the unique taste of whisky with a highly collectible design.
Tasting Notes
Color: Beautiful light gold.
Nose: Upon pouring, sweet aromas of syrup, iced crackers, and hard candy emerge, with fruity notes reminiscent of candy apples, layered with oak and straw.
Palate: The texture is oily, and a sweet, juicy taste fills the mouth, evocative of apples soaked in honey and fruit compote. The rich fruitiness gradually transforms into richer flavors of honey, cotton candy, and black tea candy.
Finish: The warm flavor of crystallized ginger and mineral-infused brown sugar combine, leaving a pleasant, lingering aftertaste.
Recommended Way to Enjoy
With plenty of fruity sweetness and bottled at a cask strength of 57.7% ABV, it is recommended to first enjoy its powerful individuality neat. Afterwards, adding a small amount of water will further open up the underlying honey and fruit aromas, making them even more vibrant.
