The history of Cointreau began in 1849, when confectioner Adolphe Cointreau and his brother Édouard-Jean founded a distillery in Angers, France. The next generation, Édouard Cointreau, devoted himself to researching oranges from around the world and perfected the recipe in 1875. It remains unchanged to this day.
Product Description
The traditional production method is still followed today: the peels of bitter oranges (dried) and sweet oranges (dried and fresh) are carefully steeped in neutral spirits before being distilled, then balanced with beet sugar and adjusted to the desired alcohol content with pure water. Its concentration of orange-peel essence is exceptionally high even among orange liqueurs, while its sweetness remains restrained. An intensely concentrated orange aroma, far richer than its clear color suggests, fills the palate.
Recommended Ways to Enjoy
Enjoy it neat or on the rocks to fully appreciate its aroma. It is also an essential ingredient in classic cocktails enjoyed around the world, including the Margarita, Cosmopolitan, and Sidecar. Simply mixing it with orange juice or tonic water makes it easy to enjoy its authentic aroma. It is also highly regarded for adding fragrance to desserts and pairs exceptionally well with cakes and chocolate.
