We are pleased to present a special vintage released just once a year from the Speyside hidden gem, Ballindalloch Distillery. This “Vintage Release 2017” was prepared as an exclusive bottling for the Japanese and New Zealand markets. It is an exceptionally rare single malt, filled with the producer’s dedication and passion.

Key features (first use of sherry cask spirit and rarity)

The most notable feature is that this is the first Ballindalloch Vintage Release to use spirit matured in sherry casks. A superb vatting of 1st-fill bourbon barrel spirit (53%) and PX (Pedro Ximénez) sherry cask spirit (47%) is bottled at 50% ABV to bring out the fullest possible expression of its soft texture and delicate flavor. Only 800 bottles were bottled worldwide, making this an exceptionally rare release, with just 600 bottles imported to Japan.

Tasting notes

Poured into a glass, its brilliantly golden color immediately catches the eye. Aromas of apple, apricot, and honey unfold, layered with elegant oak nuances reminiscent of a woodworking atelier. As it breathes, the aromas develop into something sweeter and more complex, evoking ripe plum and raisin bread. The palate is soft and fruity, with stewed apple in syrup accented by cinnamon and clove, followed by the sweetness of golden raisins. Toward the finish, tea leaves and pleasing wood spices bring everything into focus, leading to an elegant, lingering aftertaste.

To fully appreciate the elegant interplay of the rich sweetness of Pedro Ximénez sherry casks and the bright character of bourbon barrels, we recommend enjoying this whisky neat first. A small splash of water will further open up the aromas. After dinner, try taking your time savoring it with dried fruit or unsalted nuts.
