Clynelish Distillery, built on the outskirts of Brora in the northern Highlands, was originally intended for the farmers of the fertile coastal region of Sutherland.
Built in 1819 by the man who would later become the Duke of Sutherland, the distillery provided a ready market for the grain grown by the tenant farmers.

In its early days, Clynelish enjoyed an extremely high reputation and, due to its refusal to sell to "trade buyers," was only sold to familiar private customers for many years.
In 1886, Alfred Barnard, one of the pioneers of whisky writing, stated in his work that it "was always the most expensive of Scotch whiskies."

However, due to the depression of 1931, the distillery was forced to close.
Distillation resumed in 1938, but it was soon closed again from May 1941 to November 1945, this time due to a halt in barley supply during World War II.

In the 1960s, Clynelish was modernized, and in 1967-68, a new distillery was built on an adjacent site with exactly the same design as the original, giving Clynelish a new lease on life.
Thus, the production of traditional whisky was entrusted to the new Clynelish Distillery.
