History and Background

Fort William is a whisky produced at the Ben Nevis Distillery, located at the foot of Ben Nevis in the western Scottish Highlands. Founded in 1825, this distillery is one of Scotland's oldest licensed distilleries and has been owned by Nikka Whisky (Asahi Group Holdings) since 1989. Nikka Whisky was established by Masataka Taketsuru, known as the "Father of Japanese Whisky," and the Ben Nevis Distillery is Nikka Whisky's only distillery in Scotland. Against this backdrop, it serves as a bridge between Japanese and Scottish whisky cultures.

Production Method and Characteristics

The Ben Nevis Distillery is surrounded by abundant peat, which serves as fuel for drying the malted barley. Fort William, crafted with the blessings of this abundant nature, adheres to traditional Scotch whisky production methods while being blended to suit the delicate palates of Japanese consumers. The raw spirits distilled at the Ben Nevis Distillery are exported not only within Scotland but also extensively to Japan, and are used in whiskies such as Black Nikka.
