Overview

"Gaia Flow Single Malt Japanese Whisky Shizuoka United S" is the first regular single malt whisky from the Gaia Flow Shizuoka Distillery in Shizuoka Prefecture. The "S Series," which had previously been released seasonally, has now been launched as a standard item that embodies the Shizuoka Distillery's style.

This whisky blends two types of unblended spirits from the Shizuoka Distillery: the powerful and savory spirit produced by the "W" direct-fired still, and the light and fruity spirit produced by the "K" steam-heated still. By combining their unique characteristics, a well-balanced flavor is achieved.

Production Method and Characteristics

Stills Unique to Shizuoka Distillery

The Shizuoka Distillery utilizes its unique facilities and production methods, employing two completely different primary stills, "W" and "K," each with distinct personalities.

• W Still (Direct-Fired): The world's only still that uses thinned lumber from Okushizu as fuel, distilling at a high temperature of 800℃. It produces spirits with a burnt, savory aroma and a powerful body.
• K Still (Steam-Heated): Uses a Japanese-made pot still to create delicate, floral, and fruity spirits.

These two types of spirits undergo a second distillation in the "S" re-still, maximizing their respective characteristics.

Maturation and Blending

The raw materials mainly consist of unpeated malt from Scotland, peated malt, and malt for beer, as well as some unblended barley from Japan. Maturation primarily takes place in first-fill Bourbon barrels, and the use of diverse casks creates a deep and complex flavor.

"S Series" Expressing the House Style

The "S Series" expresses the unique style of the Shizuoka Distillery, where the fruity and light flavor produced by the steam-heated "K" and the heavy and profound flavor from the direct-fired "W" are harmoniously balanced and integrated.

Tasting Notes

Aroma

Fresh citrus aromas spread, followed by sweet notes of ripe fruit, caramel, and vanilla. Furthermore, smoke and a savory quality derived from direct firing are added, allowing for a profound aroma.

Taste

Fruity sweetness and spice are well-balanced, with a pleasant acidity providing an accent. A rich body, characteristic of direct-fired distillation, expands, offering a smooth yet complex flavor.

Finish

A long-lasting woody bitterness and smokiness, with a hint of fruity sweetness remaining, creating a pleasant finish.
